If you had another chance at success, What will you do with it?
Kola’s wife is due in three months; his landlord has threatened to throw them out if he doesn't pay up their current and outstanding rent. He is not equipped to handle the financial responsibilities. His wholesale electronics dealership business has been unable to rein in meaningful returns over the last year. His situation forces him to choose between two bitter pills. To sell his dealership or fold up.
Kenneth Igho, the founder of the biggest e-commerce electronics website in Nigeria made an offer and he would be coming over to survey the company before he buys.
Kola had expected to meet a man in his 50’s but he surprisingly seems to be around his age. Kola admires his sophisticated look. His designer blue jeans, long sleeve cotton shirt and Italian leather sandals. Everything about him tells Kola they are not in the same league. After the survey, they discuss in Kola’s office.
“You look quite familiar. I just can’t seem to place you yet” Kola stated.
Kenneth thoughtfully accesses Kola.
“Did you serve in Ondo state?” Kenneth suddenly sits up at Kola’s question.
“Boss man! Na you be this? How I no take recognize you na!’’
Kola’s memory is juggled and they throw formalities to the wind as they hug and catch up.
“I must confess Ken, It’s not been easy. I started this business with the funding we got from that CBN/NYSC initiative. It’s really painful that I have to let it go so I do not lose everything.”
“I feel your pain.” There is brief silence before Kenneth continues. “What have you done to salvage the business?”
“Guy, I hired marketers, bided to get contracts, I put up adverts in newspapers. Nothing seems to be working anymore. ‘How are you doing it bruh?”
“Kola, your problem has a simple solution.”
“My guy, you have to fill me in. I am sinking.”
“A friend introduced me to a company whose sole interest is to see small/medium scale businesses soar by helping them reach their target audience on the web. I paid them a token to design my website and market my business online. In a few weeks, everything was set up. The team handled marketing for my business online and I have not regretted that business decision till date.”
“Wow Ken that is amazing!’
“Exactly. The webfactor, personal commitment and a skilled work-team is the special mix that helped me grow my small scale business into the booming enterprise it is today.”
“This seems to be medicine after death Ken.” He adds shaking his head sadly. Kenneth taps Kola’s shoulder “Your case is not hopeless. I won’t buy your company. I will invest in it. If my business can attain the height it has currently by putting it on the web, then yours is as good as a win.
Kola jumps from his seat shocked “For real?”
“For real bruh, it’s time for you to go virtual.”
Kola added the web factor to his business and today, his company is soaring.
